Hello, hello, hello! How are you guys today? Leave a comment down below and let me know how you’re feeling 🙂
Due to our crazy, busy and stressful lives I decided to make a little ‘one day detox’ guide. I have a feeling this will be a longish post so go get yourself a cup of tea or coffee before you start reading. Did you get it? Are you ready?
Okay, we can begin so let me tell you how you can do a one day detox at home and feel like a new and empowered you.
‘One Day Detox for Mind, Body and Soul’ Guide
Detox for Body (Nutritional)
Start your day with a glass of warm lemon water.
Lemon water is a great option for all of you who dislike plain water. After you wake up fill up a mason jar with lukewarm water, squeeze the juice from 1 lemon and add it to your water. That’s it, don’t add sugar, don’t make lemonade, just pure lemon water.
Lemons are rich in vitamin C and this particular vitamin improves skin quality and helps protect cells from free radicals. Drinking lemon water aids digestion, boosts immune system and of course, detoxifies by helping flush out the toxins in your body.
Eat more fibre.
I actually wrote a detailed blog post on everything you need to know about fibre so head over there if you want to learn more. Otherwise, let me quickly mention how fibre helps detox our bodies.
When we consume food the bad stuff tends to stick to our colon and as it builds up it can prevent nutrients from being absorbed. Incomes fibre. Fibre is what makes your bowels work, let’s put it like that.
As fibre travels through your digestive system it grabs and takes the bad stuff, the toxins out with it. If you consume the right amount every day you’re preventing the build-up of toxins and allowing your body to absorb the needed nutrients.
Add dark, leafy greens to your meals.
No need for an explanation here. I’m pretty sure you’re aware of the leafy greens’ power. They’re packed with vitamins, such as vitamin C, E, K and vitamins from the B group. Dark leafy greens are a great source of minerals (iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium), they’re full of fibre and low in carbs.
All of this puts them on the top of the list of detoxifying food. Since veggies are rich in fibre they help you lose weight as they keep you feeling full for longer periods of time. Furthermore, dark leafy greens aid in digestion, boost immune system, reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, burn fat, reduce cravings and they’re packed with antioxidants.
If you don’t eat dark green veggies this is your chance to start implementing them in your diet as they are of great importance to your health.
Stay hydrated and avoid caffeine.
This is your day to avoid coffee and any other drinks that contain caffeine. I know that most of you can’t get through the day if you haven’t had a cup of coffee (or two) but that’s the unhealthy side of it – addiction.
Just for one day decide to avoid caffeine. Instead, drink the previously mentioned lemon water, plain water or tea (but then again, caffeine free tea). The purpose of a detox is to give your major organs a break from fighting off and processing all the toxins that come through foods and drinks we consume.
The thing with caffeine is that it makes your liver work hard. Your liver has to detoxify caffeine by breaking it down into water-soluble metabolites which are later excreted through urine. Since we said that it’s important to give your major organs a break during detox, do your liver a favour and avoid caffeine during detox.
One Day Detox Meal Plan
Here is a suggested meal plan for a full one day detox to give you a rough idea and help you plan your own meals. Adjust to your liking and preferences but keep in mind to eat a lot of veggies and fruit, as well as fibre and protein.
Breakfast – eggs & veggies or oatmeal/porridge
Snack – fruit (banana, apple, pear, blueberries) & nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts)
Lunch – sweet potato and chicken breasts + veggies
Optional snack – smoothie
Dinner – refreshing salad (mix chickpeas, cabbage, peas, corn, carrots and (black) beans then dress with lemon or lime juice)
Detox for Body (Physical)
Yes to yoga and/or meditation.
This is the day to give your body a break from all the heavy lifting in the gym. Oooor give it a break from all the sitting around. Whether you’re an active person or not both yoga and meditation have great benefits for our bodies.
Yoga sequences with a lot of twists included help remove toxins and stimulate digestion and circulation. Whenever there’s a yoga topic I always mention and recommend YogaWithAdriene’s channel. She has so many videos up on YouTube so pick one that your body needs the most and get ready to feel awesome and rejuvenated.
If you prefer meditation take 10 minutes after you wake up or before going to bed and meditate. Meditation will help you focus, it will reduce stress, teach you how to be in the moment, help you appreciate life more and help you control your thoughts.
Brisk walk (preferably in the morning hours)
Walking is a light form of exercise that is great for both your body and mind. It is easy on the joints and helps you clear your thoughts. If you’re a nature person like me, you’ll find walking through a forest or along the beach a great stress reliever.
It is recommended you go for a walk in the morning hours because it will boost your energy and help you create a positive mind-set for the rest of the day. A brisk morning walk will set you up for the day by making you feel good, focused and centred first thing in the morning.
If you need a few more reasons to go out for a walk remember that walking improves circulation and cardiovascular health, helps you sleep better and strengthens muscles and bones.
Have an early night.
It would be the best if you could have an early night before your detox day so you start it all fresh and rested. However, if that is not possible for you then do your best to go to bed early when you do the detox. Your body will appreciate the well needed rest plus some extra hours of sleep.
Detox for Soul & Mind
No phone and TV for the day.
Did you panic just by reading that title? If so, you shouldn’t be so addicted to your phone. Unfortunately, most people let their phones run their lives. They wake up – check social media, while eating – scrolling through phone, watching a movie – still have to check the phone, going to bed – “oh i better check it one more time”.
Simply put, it’s crazy. Pick a day in the week and go technology free. No phone, no TV, no laptop, nothing. If you really need your phone throughout the week (let’s say for work) then choose to do this on a Saturday or Sunday when you’re off work and at home.
Here are some bad side effects of being on your phone too much: disrupted sleep, short attention span, stress, phantom vibrations/notifications (feeling/hearing your phone buzzing when it isn’t), back and neck problems, anxiety and depression, etc.
Lot of the same problems are related to spending too much time in front of TV or laptop.
DIY facial or full spa day.
This has to be my favourite thing to do whether it’s a rest day or a detox day. I’m pretty sure you know what works best for you when it comes to planning out your at-home spa day but here is what I like to do.
First things first, if I wore any make up that day I take it off. After that I wash my face with a cleanser and then I exfoliate. Btw here you can find my DIY face scrub. After exfoliating I put on a face mask and fresh cucumber slices on my eyes.
During this I do nothing but lie on the bed and relax for 15 minutes. When 15 minutes is up I rinse off the face mask and apply moisturiser. Face is done, now time to take care of the body. I start by drawing a bubble bath and lighting a few candles. I put on music that suits me and just relax in the bath for 20 minutes.
After that I exfoliate all over (see DIY body scrub) and once I’m out of the bath I apply body lotion. Once all of that is done I take care of my nails and eyebrows and that is it. I must admit it’s a pretty good feeling when you’re all groomed and you smell like a walking flower haha 😉
P.S. No matter how busy you are, find at least 2 days in a month when you treat yourself with things like this. It’s pretty important because it’s a great stress reliever.
Read a book.
If you don’t enjoy reading books then simply skip this tip and do something else that relaxes you. On the other hand, if you enjoy reading then you know how awesome books are. There are so many choices that let you visit any world that you like.
Whether it be our Earth or places like Gallifrey, Hogwarts, Camelot, Mordor, Neverland, etc. Other than setting your imagination free, books have some amazing benefits for our mind. Such as memory improvement, vocabulary expansion, improved focus and concentration, better writing skills, stress reduction and increased knowledge.
They say reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body so keep on reading and learning!
I honestly hope you found this post helpful and once you decide to do a detox for your mind, body and soul please let me know in the comments what you thought about it and how it made you feel. Until then, take care of yourself, eat your 5 a day, stay hydrated and keep calm,
